Customized kitchen design has been gaining plenty of popularity of late. This is main attributed to the fact that kitchen are now become the heart of every household being abuzz of numerous activities in addition to preparing meals. Kids doing their assignments, a place that family members gather each day, even to entertain or socialize. This transition has led to numerous changes in how design is planned for the cookery. Conventional layouts such as the L shaped design, parallel kitchen, straight kitchen, peninsula kitchen etc are still popular even today, however these are further customized to meet the needs of the end user. For kitchen designers, it is the placement of the sink, the stove and the refrigerator that together form what is commonly referred to as the kitchen triangle as the starting point of any kitchen layout. The thumb rule being these basic kitchen essentials are placed in a distance that is not more than 5-7 feet apart to facilitate easy access when cooking. Based around the kitchen triangle other aspects as such the placement of the countertops and other appliances are decided upon.
Cabinetry is available in mainly three main finishes; laminate finish, hand polished and melamine finished. Materials used for cabinetry are plywood or compressed wood (MDF). It is always recommended to have overhead cabinets to allocate space for storage. In addition to the overhead storage space its is also essential to create storage space in other areas of the kitchen. it could be a bottom-to-ceiling shelf on a wall or even bottom cabinets on a kitchen island counter. The choice of colors are also a critical choice that can either make or break the look and feel of the cooking space. Colors are known to have an impact on human beings and are extremely important in creating the right mood and ambience. Kitchens unlike other rooms in the house can handle bright colors therefore colors such as bright yellow, reds, oranges etc are palettes you can explore. The cabinetry colors are usually recommended to be a of softer tones thus creating a beautiful contrast against the loud colors on the wall. To compliment the use of colors, equal importance is given to lighting. Lighting is categorized in to natural and artificial lighting. An artificial lighting layout plan should be spread across the room and preferably be in layers. The first layer being specifically for task lighting and the other for ambient lighting. Natural light entering the room is always beneficial. It makes the room appear to be larger in appearance and also helps in keeping it fresh and airy. |
